Terms of Use
The short version. MeatCheck reads the label on a package of meat and explains the claims printed on it. It reads what the label says. It does not test the product and is not medical advice. It can misread small or blurred print, so check the package yourself before you rely on a result. Pro is an auto-renewing subscription billed by Apple; cancel any time in your Apple Account settings, and refunds are Apple's to give.
1. The agreement
MeatCheck is developed and operated by Learning Phase Labs Inc., a company incorporated in Ontario, Canada. These terms are between you and Learning Phase Labs Inc. ("MeatCheck", "we", "us"). By installing or using the app you accept them. If you do not accept them, delete the app.
2. What the app does
You photograph a package of meat. The app sends the photo to our service, which reads the printed text and returns the product name, the ingredient list, the origin statement, the claims found and a set of flags. Each flag is shown with what the label says and what that means, with a link to the rule or agency page behind it. The Guide carries the same explanations as standing articles.
3. What the app cannot tell you
This section matters more than any other, so it is written plainly.
- MeatCheck reads printed text. It does not analyse the meat, run a test, or detect anything from the appearance, colour or texture of the product.
- It cannot tell you whether a product is cell-cultivated. It reports whether the words used for cell-cultivated meat appear on the label.
- It cannot tell you whether an animal was actually given antibiotics or hormones, whether meat was previously frozen, or whether packaging used carbon monoxide. None of that is readable from a label, and the app says so instead of guessing.
- It is not medical, dietary, allergy or nutrition advice. If you have an allergy or a medical condition, read the package itself and speak to a qualified professional. Never rely on the app to decide whether a food is safe for you.
- Reading small print from a photo is imperfect. Glare, folds, blur, torn labels and poor light cause misreads. Treat every result as a prompt to look at the package, not a replacement for looking at it.
- Rules change. The explanations reflect US federal and state rules as we understood them on the date shown, and they may be out of date, incomplete or wrong for your situation. They are not legal advice.
4. How you may use it
Use MeatCheck for your own shopping. Do not use it to make claims about a brand or a retailer that the label does not support, to scrape or resell its output, to reverse-engineer it, or to send it anything other than photographs of food packaging. Do not use automated tools against our service or attempt to get around the usage limits.
5. The free tier
You can use MeatCheck without paying. The free tier allows a set number of scans to begin with and a smaller number each day after that; the Guide and sharing stay free. These limits can change, and we will not change them in a way that takes away something you have already paid for.
6. Subscriptions and trials
MeatCheck Pro is an auto-renewing subscription sold through the App Store. The App Store shows the price, the plan length and the trial terms in your currency before you confirm, and that screen governs. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation. A free trial converts into a paid period automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Each period renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. If you have already used a free trial for this app, an offer may not be available to you again; Apple decides that.
7. Cancelling
Cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or from the App Store account page. Cancelling stops the next renewal; access continues until the end of the period you have paid for. We cannot cancel a subscription for you, because Apple holds the billing relationship.
8. Refunds
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, at Apple's discretion, through reportaproblem.apple.com. We cannot issue refunds. Write to us anyway if something went wrong — we can often fix the underlying problem, and we will support a refund request where it is warranted.
9. Price and plan changes
Prices can change. Apple notifies you of a price increase on an existing subscription and asks you to agree before it takes effect; if you do not agree, the subscription does not renew. We may change what is in a plan, and we will not remove a feature that was the reason you subscribed without telling you first.
10. Your scans and shared cards
The photos you take and the scans they produce are yours. They are stored on your phone; see the Privacy Policy for what happens during a scan. A verdict card you share carries the app name and the text the app read; you are responsible for what you post, and for not presenting a verdict as a claim about a company that the label does not support.
11. Availability
Scanning depends on our server and on outside services. Either can be slow, down or busy, and we may limit how often you can scan to keep the service running. The Guide and your saved scans work without a connection. We do not promise any level of uptime.
12. No warranty
MeatCheck is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows. We do not warrant that a reading will be accurate, complete, current or fit for any particular purpose. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case the narrowest exclusion the law allows applies.
13. Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from a purchase you made or did not make, from a misread label, or from reliance on an explanation in the app. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
14. Ending this agreement
You can end it at any time by deleting the app. We can suspend or end access if you break these terms or abuse the service. If we end your access without cause while you have paid time remaining, ask Apple for a refund of the unused part and we will support the request.
15. Apple
Apple is not a party to this agreement and is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app. If the app fails to conform to a warranty that cannot be disclaimed, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price; otherwise Apple has no warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claim about the app, including product liability, regulatory compliance or intellectual property claims. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
16. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and the courts of Ontario have jurisdiction. This does not take away consumer protections you have where you live.
17. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the date at the top changes with it, and a material change is flagged in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the new terms.
